  • Give others benefit of doubt and assume positive intent
  • Be open and welcoming to other’s perspectives
  • Accept that there can be opposite and equally valid perspectives on the same issue
  • Be willing to be vulnerable and share my voice and experience
  • Be grateful when someone else is willing to be vulnerable and share their voice and perspective

Wow! Catherine, I absolutely love this piece. Serendipitously, your tweet showed up on my feed and l looked at the brooding sky in your picture and remembered the Caribbean storms of my childhood. I’m so glad I shared this exchange with you. There’s SO much we can learn from each other if only we take the time to care and listen. Thank you. I appreciate you, my friend! 💜

Oh, I love this Catherine! I try hard to understand the world…especially the people and ideas I don’t particularly like. Your writing is such a great example of how personal experience shapes our perspectives. Thank you for helping me set my intentions for the day!

Having always lived land-locked with little ocean experience, I can’t imagine what an ocean storm is like or how special it is to watch it roll in. Except growing up in tornado ally, we scrutinized storm clouds approaching or passing over, speculating whether it would have the tornado that would wipe us out. Most spectacular were the clouds passing overhead that drooped with hail that it would soon drop elsewhere. The lightening storms were beautiful, so long as they were in the distance. So I have a fear of any storm that could spawn a tornado, and tornados haunt my dreams when I am stressed. Now, I live in a place with few tornados and a safe basement, just in case.

Tornadoes are terrifying. We had a tornado shelter in our home in Georgia growing up. The roar of that storm was scary. Thanks for reminding me that there are also different types of storms in life as well.
